NLP Training or NLP Therapy? – the difference is clear…

We’re often asked what the difference is between an NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Training course and the use of NLP within Coaching or Therapy, which is a very valid question. This is what the difference looks like …

whether you want training or therapy, edge nlp offers you both

Many Therapists, Business Coaches and Life Coaches are trained as NLP Practitioners, empowering them to use NLP techniques within their therapeutic or coaching fields. Some of these skills include Rapport building, which enables the Practitioner to very quickly get onto the same wavelength as their client, thus making the two-way communication and change process quick and easy.

Then there are the Sensory Acuity skills which the Practitioner will have, empowering them to see the physiological changes within the client from second to second, giving them the ability to read very accurately what’s happening with the client’s thinking and feelings; does this match what they’re actually saying? Reading Eye Patterns and listening out for the language used by the client to determine the way that they are processing information internally is another key skill that the Practitioner will have to further enhance communication and facilitate change.

Eye Patterns are a really useful way for a Practitioner to change a client’s strategy too, whether that’s a strategy for decision making, spelling, shopping or getting motivated. Using techniques such as Submodality changes will be a skill which the Practitioner will be adept at – this is all about how clients file experience in their brains and how they think – identifying filing and thinking patterns which don’t serve a client make it very easy to create changes necessary.

The Practitioner will also be skilled in Anchoring techniques; Anchoring enables a client to get into any emotional state they wish to at will; a confident, relaxed or passionate state, for example. These are just some of the NLP techniques which the Practitioner will have available, strengthened by the exquisite linguistic skills they will have learnt and perfected.

So essentially, a Practitioner uses these techniques with a client during one to one therapy to assist the client to reach the outcomes which together they’ve set. For a client, experiencing NLP within Therapy or Coaching is a ‘do to’ experience; a client needs the Practitioner’s assistance to bring about change … whether that’s for stress management issues, smoking cessation, weight loss or gaining confidence. The same is true if it’s business coaching or goal setting.

NLP Training is different in that the client will attend an NLP Practitioner training course and will learn and perfect all of the above skills to put into practice in every area of their lives, therefore not needing a third party to assist. They will apply these skills themselves in their own world, empowering them personally and professionally. So NLP Training is a ‘do with’ experience. Six days of NLP Practitioner training is incredibly cathartic because as well as learning a whole host of techniques and interventions, Practitioner students will also experience them, allowing them to almost spring clean their minds and fine tune their thinking and emotions. Regardless of your industry or profession, NLP training will enable you reach quicker and better results in everything you do; it will become second nature to you.

For some people, NLP Practitioner training is the way forward; for others, working with a third party and being a client within a Coaching or Therapy environment is preferable. Think of it a little bit like looking after you car; you can learn about vehicle maintenance and make sure that your motor is always running with optimal performance or you can choose to take it to a mechanic whenever you have a challenge. To coin the old phrase, it’s different strokes for different folks!
