Are You a Pessimist or an Optimist?

As obvious as it might seem we still at times forget that the true winners in life are those of us who have learned to take control of our own mind and use it so it serves us best. Most people think they can’t achieve this kind of positive thinking given their lot in life, but at Edge NLP, we know better …

Pessimist or Optimist Picture

would you rather be a pessimist or an optimist?

By recognising and understanding that unhelpful thoughts may be created through our own childhood experiences, we can understand that negative behaviours come from truly believing something that we are repeatedly told. We become our own a self fulfilling prophecy – we believe it and it becomes true. Sound familiar?

Many of us simply settle for our lot in life and never pursue our true goals, so we become very good at being unhappy about our life situation. Therefore, it stands to reason that we can also become very good at being happy about our life and doing what we really want to be doing, doesn’t it? It’s all in the mind!

Remember that your mind is under your control. You are in charge and not the other way round. That puts you in a position of power. You can change your thinking and influence your outcomes so your life isn’t so much in your own hands, it’s in your own mind. A positive mental attitude can really create positive results in your life.

However you believe we got here, we are put on this planet to live our lives to the best of our abilities and to have a positive and fulfilling life experience. We will achieve far more by overcoming any negative thinking and removing behaviours that do not serve us in a positive way. How do we do this? By developing a positive mental attitude through controlling our own mind!

“Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right!”
Henry Ford

Optimism and pessimism are very powerful mindsets, and both will provide you with a 100% success rate – good or bad – just as Henry Ford said. We all come to expect the result to match the thoughts we put out there. If you think something will end in disaster then you will be delighted with the disastrous results as we create a ripple effect from your thinking out into your world.

Equally, when you put positive thoughts out there and something great happens to you, the words “wow” and “that’s so cool” cross your mind. Don’t be surprised about this as our unconscious mind has been looking for the positive outcome your asked for.

A recent study into the two mind models of the pessimist and the optimist found that the optimists believes and expects good things to happen instead of just hoping. Conversely, the pessimist expect a poor outcome. The same study by CS Carver and MF Scheier (1981) noted that some people can maintain a state of dispositional optimism about life most of the time. Central to this is their ‘attitude’ and self knowledge that we are in control of our minds. This is fundamental to having a positive mental attitude.

Everything in life that you dislike comes from your own thoughts. Equally everything that you like is from your thoughts too, so it stands to reason that being in control of the most powerful tool we have – our mind – can only enhance our lives and always result in a positive outcome.

So now is the time to move from pessimist to optimist and really take control of your own mind and thinking, isn’t it? all us on +44 (0) 2031 450698 to find out about our NLP Practitioner courses.

Be excellent …
